Chapter 7 - On Track
Bruce is led outside the jail where Sariah awaits with her assistant, Aisha. Both women look at him as he steps outside with his hand shielding his eyes from the sun. He stands steadfast next to the guard. Sariah draws near, admiring his cleanliness.
Sariah - "You're not wearing the mask?"
Batman - "What's the point? You already know who I am, and so does your staff!"
Sariah - "Fine then. I'll call you by your legal name.
Batman - "Whatever."
Sariah crosses her arms and after standing there a moment she barks out, "On your knees!"
Bruce is taken back and looks at Sariah as if to question what she just said, then his eyes shift to Aisha. After a second of debating it in his head, he swallows his pride and drops down to his knees in front of them all. Humiliated he looks away from them trying to hide his emotion. Sariah leans over and grabs his chin and looks at his face, "It's good to see that you haven't lost your mind in the last ten minutes." She releases his face and he continues to stare away. Sariah walks behind him and orders him, "Lower your head." Reluctant and feeling degraded further he sneers as he pulls his head down lower.
Sariah - "Relax, I'm putting some burn gel on your neck underneath your collar. It will help it to feel better, and make it so I don't have to remove the collar to treat the burn if it gets worse."
After massaging the gel onto the back of his neck, she allows him to rise.
Sariah - "Get in the backseat."
Bruce, Sariah, Aisha, and the head guard Charles, all enter the vehicle. Sariah sits in the back seat next to Bruce where she can watch him. During the five minute ride to the training area, Bruce refuses to make eye contact with Sariah.
Sariah - "Do you hate me yet?"
He remains silent but glances in her direction out of the corner of his eye. With her outstretch arm she slaps the back of his head, "Answer me!"
Bruce rubs the back of his head looking at her offensively, "I don't hate you... I despise you and I find your very presence repulsive."
Sariah - "Good! That's the first step to becoming obedient... We're here, get out."
All the passengers exit the vehicle and approach the training area.
Sariah - "Alright crew, I want to take the next two hours and do an initial assessment of Batman's skills on this obstacle course. Aisha, take the clipboard, write down notes and times on the items listed with the stop watch. Bruce, you follow me to starting area."
Both walk up to the starting area that consists of a climbing wall towering in front of them. It's make-shift construction consists of steel and wood with plastic climbing holds. Bruce looks up, examining the wall.
Sariah - "The climbing wall is forty feet tall. On top is a platform with a climbing rope that extends another forty feet in height. From there you will proceed along the obstacle course two thousand feet in length, then back down to the second level, negotiating yourself in this direction where it will end behind the climbing wall. There are two safety nets located under the balancing beams on each level. There are no safety ropes or harnesses to use, so if you fall, it will probably hurt. This is our most difficult obstacle course on the island and the fastest time completed was seven minutes and thirty-two seconds. The time will start when you are ready."
Sariah turns and begins walking away. As she turns back to tell Bruce one more thing, she is surprised to see him half way up the climbing wall already. Her jaw drops as she watches him effortlessly make his way to the platform in seconds. Sariah runs to Aisha to compare times with the other prisoners. She looks up to find him again and cannot see him immediately.
Sariah - "Where is he?"
The guard points down the obstacle course and shouts out, "Over there!"
Sariah - "What the hell?"
The staff watch in awe as Batman gracefully scales the obstacles and within minutes makes his way down the course and finishes.
Aisha - "Four minutes and twenty-five seconds."
Sariah grabs the stopwatch to check the time, "That's impossible! How the hell did he do that?"
Bruce approaches the group. All of them are looking at him astonished. Sariah looks at him speechless, her mouth gaping open.
Batman - "From the look on your face, I'd say I beat the time."
Sariah - "You're going to have to do it again! This time I'm going to watch you from on top."
Batman - "Whatever."
Sariah and Bruce walk to the front of the course again, "Wait until I reach the top, before you start." Sariah begins her ascent toward the top. Bruce watches as it takes her several minutes to climb. Sariah shouts down at Bruce to begin the course. Again he rises to the first platform without struggle hand over hand without using his feet. Up the rope he climbs, arriving in seconds, staring at Sariah as he walks passed her. She watches as he runs the rest of course without stopping; dashing across the balancing beam, leaping over a ten foot gap, bypassing the rope, and practically springing over a twelve foot wall. Sariah runs to the balancing beam and jumps down to the safety net, in time to see him run by. Bruce finishes the course again and waits for Sariah to arrive at the bottom.
Aisha - "Three minutes, thirty-six seconds."
Sariah pants, holding her hands on her hips. "Holy Shit!" She looks at him, sweat dripping down her face, while he stands there peacefully leaning against the jeep.
Sariah – "You're quicker than I imagined!"
Sariah turns to discuss another training assessment with Aisha. Peeking into the vehicle, Bruce quietly reaches down behind the backseat and grips a lug wrench. He pulls it out slowly and approaches the guard from behind. Taking advantage of the situation, Bruce strikes the guard with the wrench along his neck, knocking him unconscious. Startled, the women scream. Bruce leaps upon Sariah, "Run Aisha!" She yells. Bruce balls up his fist and reaches back. He then punches Sariah, striking her in the face causing her to black out. Bruce stands up and tosses the tool, hitting Aisha in the knee, causing her to fall. He runs to her, capturing her. He twists her arms behind her back and retrieves the wrench. Seating her next to the unconscious guard he warns her not to move. Bruce searches the guard and finds a utility knife in his pocket. Using the knife he cuts the seat belts from the jeep and uses them to tie the assistant to the guard. He then fixes them to a post under the obstacle course. Using the remaining belt he binds Sariah's arms behind her and stuffs her mouth with a rag from inside the jeep. Bruce lifts the hood to the jeep and cuts the battery cables, making the car inoperable. Bruce picks up Sariah's body and puts her over his shoulder. Aisha watches as Bruce disappears into the thick island vegetation.
Chapter 8 – Off Course
Bruce travels for several miles, carrying Sariah over his shoulder. When she awakens, Bruce holds her tighter to keep her from struggling. He comes across a faint path which leads to an old unused building. Bruce kicks the door, breaking the old rusted latch and lock. Upon entering he notices in one corner, a dusty wooden table, and a couple of metal folding chairs. He closes the door behind himself and checks the visibility range through the glass windows. Bruce walks to the table and firmly places Sariah down in a chair. Still bound and gagged, she stares at him livid. Paranoid that Sariah's staff may follow, Bruce continues to scan out the dirty windows. Feeling fairly confident that no one is tracking them yet, he changes his attention to Sariah. Her nose slowly dripping blood down her lips to the rag, she sits there at his disposal. Still feeling the rush of adrenaline through his body, he finally releases the wrench from his hand, setting it on the table.
Batman – "I'm sorry that I hit you so hard."
Sariah glares at him with discontent. Batman approaches her and raises his hands towards her face. She flinches and pulls back. He pauses for a moment before placing his thumbs on the sides of her nose.
Batman – "Stay still. This will only hurt for a second."
She squeals and winces in pain as he pushes the bridge of her nose back into place. He then pulls the rag from her mouth and places it up against her nostrils to stop the bleeding, and wipes her face clean. She pulls her face away from him trying to refuse his compassion. Sensing her stubbornness, he tosses the rag to the table and folds his arms.
Sariah – "What do you want from me?" She speaks to him with utter resentment on her face, not making any eye contact.
Batman leans back against the table and looks down at her, "I would ask you the same question." Sariah continues to look away refusing to answer.
Batman – "Feeling a bit vulnerable, are we?" Sariah quickly returns a glare in his direction, her eyes narrow with anger.
Batman – "Ahh. So you are human after all. Guess this wasn't in your plans, was it?" Pressing her lips together firmly she returns to look at the floor.
Sariah – "You are still my prisoner." She looks back up at him for his reaction now, "My staff will find me- and after I haul your ass back to the compound, I'm going to force all the other prisoners to watch, as I make one-hundred-thousand volts of electricity rip through your system, over, and over again."
In disbelief at her blatant attempt to aggravate him, Bruce reaches out with his large hands, with the speed of lightening, and grabs a hold of Sariah's shirt. He knocks the breath out of her as he forces her body against the wall hard. His face now, equally angered. His voice amplified in the small empty building as he shouts in her face.
Batman - "Release me from this collar, NOW!"
She closes her eyes tightly as she feels his rage flow through her. Her ears ring from the volume of his voice. She turns her face and looks up at him. Her tone is sullen now, "Nothing you say to me will ever make me let you go."
His voice now sullen as well, "Really, well, that's too bad."
Pulling her forward he jams his fist firmly into her gut. She lets out a groan before he pushes her body into the wooden table. Losing her balance, she topples over it as it falls to its side. Her arms still bound behind her, she rolls to her side quickly to get up. Bruce walks around the table, just as Sariah manages to get to her knees. He grasps her face securely, "I guess I will have to persuade you some other way." Her eyes widen before she feels the sudden blow of the back of his hand across her face. Her body flies to the cement floor and she lands hard on her shoulder. Sariah cringes now at the new abrasions on her arm and shoulder. She pulls her knees underneath her abdomen and rests her sore face on the cold, dirty floor. Trying to hide her pain, she keeps her face turned away from his. She can hear his foot steps as they get closer to her. Bruce watches as she begins to struggle with her binds. Noticing the remote to the collar on her wrist, he crouches down beside her. Bruce rests his knee upon her back, pinning her flat against the ground. He reaches over and unclasps the band. As he holds the control device in his hand, he examines it closely. He releases the pressure upon her body and stands up.
Sariah – "That will do you no good without my voice."
Frustrated he glares at her. Suddenly, Bruce's hand is cupping the side of Sariah's face. Without notice he jams his thumb underneath her jaw line making her scream.
Batman – "Stand up now!" Gripping her firmly by a pressure point she irrefutably complies. He leads her back to the chair and releases her to sit. She glares up at him, "You've proved your point Bruce. You're stronger than me, and you can push me around, especially with my hands tied behind my back!" She adds a bit of sarcasm onto the end of her statement. "But I still will not release you as my prisoner!"
Bruce stands as solid as a statue, his arms folded. He takes in a deep breath and exhales slowly, knowing he is running out of time. "Then, you leave me no choice but to do what I have to, to change your mind." His voice is sure. It sinks into her deeply and her body suddenly grows cold with fear. She swallows hard and her eyes are wide as she looks up at him. Her fear grows as he grabs her arm and leads her outside.
Sariah – "What are you doing? Where are you taking me?" Her voice trembles as he forces her along. Bruce remains silent and determined as he puts her against a large tree. Using the pocket knife he cuts the knot in her restraints and pulls her hands above her head. He ties the strap around her wrists tighter than before, and fixes it to a high branch, making Sariah stand on her toes. Her heart begins to race and her breathing becomes panicky.
Batman – "I'm done playing your games."
He reaches for the back of her shirt and pulls the tail end out of her pants. After making a little slit in the hem of the shirt with the knife, he tears it the rest of the way. He pulls the pieces aside exposing the skin on her back. Bruce then reaches down to her pants and removes the black leather belt around her waist. She looks down at his hand around her waist and whimpers slightly. She closes her eyes tightly in anticipation to what he is about to do. He folds the belt in half an cracks it, making her shudder. Pulling his hand back slightly he brings it forward again, striking Sariah across her bear skinned back. She pulls her body inward immediately, yelping in pain and yelling profanities. Before she can relax, he strikes her again and again. Her face clearly in anguish, she pulls on the straps, trying to free herself. A little higher this time, he slams the belt down again. She screams loudly, tears escaping from her eyes. He pauses for a minute, remembering to breath again. Wishing she would ask him to stop but remains firm. Knowing he is lying, he reassures her, "Sariah, I can do this all day. Tell me how to remove this collar!"
She screams back at him in desperation, her face wet with tears and sweat, "I CAN'T!" Out of frustration, he smacks the belt along her back again. Sariah remains tense as Bruce continues to whip her. The pain so intense that she is unable to let out more than a prolonged groan with each lashing. As he reaches his tenth stroke, he sees a red tinge on the black leather. He pulls away the strips of her shirt to reveal several cuts into her back, bleeding at a slow rate. He steps back worried that Sariah will not give in to his demands. Bruce whips her twice more spreading the wounds and the blood, making him cringe. He decides to raise his arm for one last strike when he is surprised to hear her utter the words, "Ok! ……..ok, please stop!" He walks closer to her to hear her say it again, "I'll do it, Bruce. I'll let you go. I can't take anymore, just please stop hitting me." He quickly pulls out the remote and holds it near her face. His voice is deep, and accepting, "Do it."
Sariah – "PEDDD, voice authorization Sariah Alexander."
PEDDD – "Voice authorization confirmed."
Sariah – "Collar One- release."
PEDDD – "Releasing Collar One."
In that very moment, the collar releases and separates enough for Bruce to remove it. In relief he pulls it apart and throws it on the ground, disgusted at the device. Sariah suddenly relaxes her body completely. Lowering her head in defeat, she begins to let go all the held in emotion. She sobs uncontrollably, still hanging there from her restraints. Bruce reaches up with the knife and cuts the strap. Her body collapses immediately to the dirty ground.
Bruce is led outside the jail where Sariah awaits with her assistant, Aisha. Both women look at him as he steps outside with his hand shielding his eyes from the sun. He stands steadfast next to the guard. Sariah draws near, admiring his cleanliness.
