Chapter 9 - Mending Ties
Bruce looks at Sariah laying on her back, recovering from the pain that has suddenly overloaded her system. He reaches down to help her up when she quickly kicks at him.
Sariah - "Get away from me!"
He pulls his hands away, "Sariah, I'm just trying to .."
Sariah - "I said, get away from me!"
She rolls over to her knees painfully. Her hands still bound together, the straps now slicing into her skin, "You've got what you wanted! Now just leave me alone!" Sariah stands and begins walking in the direction of the compound. She limps slightly, her body tired and sore. Bruce watches as she puts distance between them. He slowly follows, knowing he's not getting off the island without a boat. A boat he will have to get from Sariah. He remains silent, and feeling guilty, while listening to her soft cries of pain with each step- her shirt now stained with blood. He pauses as he sees her stop suddenly. He decides to step a little closer as he watches her sway slightly and begins to bend forward.
Batman - "Sariah? Are you ok?"
He rushes to her as she quickly falls to one side. Bruce scoops her up before she hits the ground. She lay in his arms unconscious while he begins to carry her back to the compound. The air is humid and the afternoon sun is hot as he carries her along the faint tire tracks. After walking three miles, he can hear a vehicle in the distance, approaching his direction. Three vehicles come to a halt as they round the corner of the vegetation and spot Bruce, carrying Sariah in his arms. Sheila is the first to jump out of the vehicle along with three guards carrying semi-automatic rifles.
Guard 1 - "Stop right there! Put her down and slowly step away!"
After laying her down gently on the ground, he puts his hands up showing no resistance. They order him to kneel before they place him in hand cuffs. Sheila runs to Sariah's side to check her over, "What happened? What have you done to her?" She looks over at Bruce and notices he's not wearing the collar, "She released you?"
Batman - "Yes."
Sheila turns to the guards with her hand up, "Wait! Let him go." She turns and looks back towards Bruce , "He's no longer a prisoner here. He is our guest." With those words said, the guards lower their weapons and the third removes the cuffs.
Sheila - "Put her in the van. We need to take to her the infirmary."
Bruce stands up and decides to pick up Sariah, himself. The guards stop in their tracks as they watch him move her into the van. He climbs in with her, and Sheila follows. Sheila and Bruce are crouched around Sariah's unconscious body in the back of the van. The doctor continues to examine Sariah during their travel to the infirmary. Shining a light on her face Sheila sees a lot of bruising and swollen tissue around her nose and eyes, "Boy you really clocked her good." She notices her shirt is torn and bloodied, "But where is this blood coming from?" Bruce pulls her body to its side, exposing her skin to Sheila, "Her back." Shining the light onto her back she gasps, "Oh my God! What did you do to her?" Not exactly happy with himself, he is hesitant to respond, "I ..um... had to convince her to let me go..."
Sheila touches the cuts to see how deep they are, "I guess your tactic worked. These are going to need a couple of stitches." Both remain quiet as Bruce rolls Sariah gently onto her back. He takes a seat against the wall of the van and continues to stare at Sariah.
Sheila - "So, what are you planning on doing now?"
Batman - "Well, as soon as you, or someone else that works on this island can equip me with a boat, and point me in the right direction, I will be going home."
Sheila - "Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news Batman. Sariah already dispatched the boats to the mainland to pick up the guests for this weeks fight. I'm afraid you're stuck here till they get back, unless you think you can swim."
Batman - "But the fight is three days away!" He releases a disappointed groan, "There's got to be another way to get off this island."
Sheila - "There is!" Bruce looks at her with surprise, "You're looking at it!" She points to Sariah's limp body.
Bruce pushes his head back against the wall of the van and rolls his eyes, "Unbelievable."
After a few more minutes pass, the van comes to a stop and the back doors open. Sheila climbs out the back and Bruce picks up Sariah again before exiting the vehicle. He follows Sheila inside the infirmary where he places her on the gurney. Using the pocket knife he cuts the straps that are tied around her wrists and carefully removes them. Sheila administers a smelling salt under her nose to arouse her. After a moment Sariah's face cringes and jerks away from the ammonia. Still battling unconsciousness, she bats at Sheila with her hands.
Sheila - "Wake up Sariah! Wake up!"
Sariah opens her eyes slightly and Sheila removes the odorous chemical. Groaning and moaning she puts her hand on her sore face, "Ow. Where am I?"
Sheila - "You're back at the compound, Sariah. Apparently you passed out."
Sariah - "Where is he?"
Sheila - "Batman? He's here. I'm going to give you an ice pack for your face and then I want you to lie on your stomach. You have a few cuts that need a couple of stitches."
While Sheila steps away to gather her supplies from another room, Sariah attempts to sit up. She reaches out for a hand and Bruce grabs it to help her sit up. After sitting up right Sariah opens her eyes fully and sees that Bruce has helped her up. Angry with him, she withdraws her hand quickly from his. His empty hand hangs in the open for a moment before he rests it on the edge of the bed.
Sariah - "Why aren't you long gone from here?"
Thinking he may have a better advantage if he softens a bit, he explains to her, "I had to make sure you were going to be ok." Sariah looks up at him curiously, "And your sister informed me that there were no more boats here on the island." She looks away slightly disappointed and at the same time relieved that he is staying. She carefully turns over to her stomach and lies down. Every movement painful, she groans softly into the pillow.
Sheila returns with the supplies. She removes the rest of Sariah's shirt, exposing her sports bra and bare back, and then administers a local anesthetic to the wounds. Bruce stands up and approaches Sheila, "May I?" Sheila is surprised, and Sariah's eyes grow wide as she looks off the side of the bed. Sheila hands over the rubber gloves hesitantly, "Are you sure?"
Batman - "My father was a doctor. Not to mention I've had plenty of practice stitching wounds in my line of work."
Bruce takes the gloves and puts them on. Sheila monitors and assists while Bruce carefully and elegantly places stitches in each laceration. As he finishes up, Sheila congratulates him on a job well done. She then picks up the supplies and takes them into the other room. While he sits on the stool staring at her back, a wave of guilt passes through him. Long dark bruises and swollen red marks liter her lightly tanned skin. Bruce breaks the silence in the room with his reprehensible tone, "I'm sorry." His sincerity pierces her hardened heart. She closes her eyes tightly to hold back the tears. "I know." She chokes, "But it wasn't your fault. I'm the guilty one, and I deserve any retribution you give me. You warned me. Sheila warned me, and I shouldn't have..." Sariah stops mid sentence, unable to finish acknowledging what she already knows. Bruce hesitates before carefully gripping Sariah's empty hand. At first she is startled, and then she firmly squeezes his in return.
Sheila pokes her head into the room, "Sariah, I need to get a cat scan of your head." Sariah releases a disappointed sigh before opening her hand and withdrawing from his. Painfully and carefully, she rolls to her side and sits up. Her back stinging, her shoulder and face sore with every movement. She slides her body on the bed to face Bruce , who is still sitting on the stool, letting her legs dangle off the side. As he looks upon her, for the first time he realizes how beautiful she is. His eyes unconsciously study her body. Her arms are planted firmly on the side of the bed holding up her sore body. Her bronze skin compliments her toned muscles. Her breasts voluptuously tucked inside her black sports bra. His eyes gaze down her washboard abs to her heart shaped hips, and drop to her thick thighs.
Sariah - "I'll make you a deal."
He jerks his eyes away from her body to concentrate on the conversation.
Batman - "What?"
She looks down at herself, noticing his eyes were astray, and then returns to smile back at him,
Sariah - "See something you like?"
Embarrassed he looks away, but she continues her previous statement, "I'll make you a deal Bruce. You give me two days to convince you to stay for the fight. If by the third day you are not convinced, then I will personally take you back to Gotham. The boats will be back by then, and if I haven't changed your mind, at least you will have had a good time." She smiles seductively with the last statement, hopping off the bed and walking past him. She struts away, knowing he is watching her intently. She lingers at the door way and turns to him before heading to the CT room, "Think about it."
Chapter 10 – Ultimatum
A few minutes pass while Bruce an continues to sit on the stool in the empty exam room. He ponders his options for escaping the island and realizes that he doesn't know the island well enough to leave without Sariah's help. Bruce is stirred from his thoughts as Sariah's assistant Aisha, opens the door and enters the infirmary, "Mom?" Curiously he looks at her as she stops dead in her tracks.
Aisha – "Where is the Mistress?"
Batman – "She is with the doctor. Did you just call her mom?"
Aisha – "That's none of your business! What are you doing here anyway? Should you be in the jail?"
Batman – "Hey, I didn't ask to come here, remember? Besides, I convinced Sariah to let me go. I'm waiting for the boats to return."
Aisha – "I don't understand. Why would she let you go?"
Batman – "What do you mean?"
Aisha – "She has been trying hard for a long time to bring you here. She may have taken off the collar, but there's no way the Mistress would let you leave this island."
Bruce stands up, showing a little anger. Aisha steps back but continues to be confrontational.
Batman – "What are you talking about?"
Aisha – "I know that she has no intentions on letting you leave here before the fight. She anticipated your attempted escape and sent the boats away early on purpose, to force to you to stay here. She needs you to…"
Sariah – "Enough Aisha!"
Both turn and look at Sariah standing in the doorway with Sheila right behind her. Sariah walks over to Aisha and grabs the clean shirt from her hands. Refusing to make eye contact with Bruce she commands Aisha to return to her duties. Sheila helps Sariah put the shirt on.
Batman – "Is what she said, true?"
Sariah finally gives in and looks up at him. He crosses his arms and looks at her sternly. She continues to button her shirt, "My offer still stands Bruce. You can continue to be my prisoner, or you can stay here as my guest. Either way, you will stay here until I am ready to let you go."
Bruce suddenly picks up the gurney and flips it on its side. Sheila steps back as he picks up the metal stool and throws it out the window. Sariah continues to stand in front of him giving her self as a target. He grabs her by the shirt and pulls her in close.
Batman – "You can't keep me here like some kind of pet, Sariah!
Sariah – "Are you going to continue thrashing the infirmary or are you ready to break my face now?"
He stares at her intently, and then releases her.
Sariah – "I need time to convince you to stay."
Batman – "You seem so sure you can."
Sariah – "I'm not sure, Bruce, but I have to try! I have nothing left to lose!"
He quickly grabs her by the throat. His fingers wrapped tightly around her trachea, cutting off her air supply.
Batman – "Are you saying you'd bet your life on it?"
Sariah manages to acknowledge his question. Bruce decides to loosen his grasp around her neck. She quickly bends over coughing loudly trying to regain her breath.
Batman – "I'll give you two days, Sariah. If you cannot convince me to stay here and do whatever it is you want me to do for you, then I will leave. Try to stop me and I will tear you apart!"
Sariah stands up again. Her face red and her eyes are watery. Sariah turns to Sheila, "I'm sorry for the mess."
Shelia – "That's ok. I will clean it up. Why don't you go home and rest?"
Sariah – "I can't." Sariah turns towards Bruce , "This place doesn't run itself." Sariah leaves the infirmary with Bruce following behind her.
Bruce looks at Sariah laying on her back, recovering from the pain that has suddenly overloaded her system. He reaches down to help her up when she quickly kicks at him.
